My life of pretense still continued uneventful, surprisingly my mum never told anyone about my predicament, maybe she was just hoping for me to recover. But she told mummy Prisca, one of her closest friends who visited me often.

One sunny afternoon, one of this days mummy Prisca came over to check up on me. “Ndo oh!” She said I dialect *sorry oh* I nodded in response displaying a very pathetic face “OK na kodi, I will tell Prisca to come and keep you company later in the evening, kele osiso nwam” she showed sympathy as she expertly switched from English to Igbo. “Kele osiso nwam – recover soon my child”
Some minutes later Doctor Mike came in, seems he was shocked to see Nne Prisca because he never met any visitor whenever he came around, nevertheless he greeted her in dialect “Efife oma” meaning “good afternoon”.

*Mark was not an indigene of Asaba, he was from Benin. He only came here to look for greener pastures and he seems to have more connections here that would aid his career here than in Benin*

“Dalu, doctor u seem to be learning our language real fast, I was about taking my leave before you came, biko take care of my daughter oh” mummy Prisca said. “Let me quickly see my friend off, I might get some things from the market before coming back home” my mum said to no one in particular, left me wandering if she was talking to me or the idiot who was standing beside me. They just left as mum was folding a polythene bag into the grey purse she was carrying.

“Hello dear” Rachel jumped out immediately they left as if she has been waiting for them to go. “Come to think of it, who was she referring to as “dear” of course not me, den it should be Mark, no can’t be, maybe…. Maybe” I just kept wondering. Not until she leaped on Mark and gave him a three seconds kiss. “Chisos!!!” I almost collapse, oh how much I wanted to talk her, to scream at Mark and ask how long whatever it is has been going on between them. But once Rachel gets to know that my sickness was all pretense, she would stop at nothing to expose me which would not spell good for me. I had to just contain everything.
