“Why don’t you go back to your mum”John asked me out of the blues still fixing his face on the road.

We left his house for Benin as early as five o’clock. He said it was just one hour journey.

*ehm.. I…she” I stammered. He caught me unawares with his question.

“I disappointed her” I finally managed to say, almost in tears.
“Yeah. Sure you did” he said, patting my shoulder. “But you should have gone back home that night she sent you out, at least to show you had no place to spend the night. Mother’s would always be mothers” he continued, but I kept mute.

“Then, my mother would scold me for coming back late and lock me out. I would stay outside the house until she stylishly opened the door at midnight. I would refuse to eat her food still she begs me to eat” he chuckled and I had to laugh too.

I miss my mum but I couldn’t go back home, I was ashamed of myself. My mum had trusted me that even when some of her friends told her they always saw me with different boys, she had always defended
me saying “she didn’t bring up her children that way”.
“Its been a year since my mum kicked the bucket, but I still miss her so much” John said with so much emotion in his voice. I felt his pain. I couldn’t imagine the demise of my own mother. My Father’s death was very painful and I still miss him too.

“Nancy, promise me you would go see your mum once we come back from Benin” John interrupted my thoughts. “Yes sir” I replied. I hadn’t really thought of going back home to beg my mother. “Thank you” I whispered.
“You’re welcome” he said out loud with a grin.

We got to Benin and we located the hospital Osareme was admitted in. The hospital was really big, you could get lost. It was painted white and blue, it had a black gate and was fenced round. We got in and met a receptionist who directed us to where John’s cousin was.

Doctors and nurses were walking around in haste. I really hated the smell of the hospital and I felt dizzy. We got to the ward Osareme was.

“This bony structure on the bed was a human being” I thought. The guy looked quarter to die.

“Guy, look at you. You told me you were fine” John said looking at his pathetic cousin.
“Johnny am fine. You should have seen me last two weeks when I had the accident and my bruises were still fresh. I gained consciousness two days ago that was why I called you” his cousin said in a jovial way, trying to seat up..

“Nancy” he smirked
“Mark” I gasped
I was dumbfounded and flabbergasted. So all this while Mark was Osareme. And he was giving that mischievous, annoying smile.
“Wow! You guys know each other?” John asked with excitement written all over his face.

“Pregnancy made you look really ugly” Mark said totally ignoring John’s question.
A Doctor came in just in time, cause I was about to tongue lash him.

“Is this your cousin?” The Doctor asked Mark, pointing to John.

“Yes” Mark replied.

“OK! Please sir can I see you privately for some minutes” the doctor said to John.

“Whatever you want to say, say it here” Mark quickly interrupted. He was very curious to know the condition of his health.

“Doctor, let’s just hear it” John supported.

“Alright if you insist” the short, cubby doctor said and put his right hand in his pocket, using his left hand to adjust his tie.

“Ehn….”he cleared his throat. The room was very quiet, everybody was under suspense.
“We have been trying our possible best to join the bones on his legs, but the truck really damaged them. Am afraid he won’t be able to walk again. And. . .” he stopped and removed his hand from his pocket.

“And what?” Mark was all tensed up.
“And you won’t be able to get a woman pregnant” the Doctor contained.

Everywhere was as quiet as a grave yard, as we tried to assimilate what the doctor just said.
John was whispering “Jesus” with sadness written all over his face. To my dismay, I pitied Mark.

“Nancy ooh” Mark was crying out loud like a baby who lost his candy. He was calling my name as he cried and I felt like laughing. John was consoling him.

Mark had an accident on his way to the airport. He sold his house and was supposed to leave the country that day when he collided with a trailer. The trailer spiolt his car beyond repair, left him unable to walk and also impotent.
We had to stay with Mark at the hospital since he was wailing like a baby. We left the following morning.
